Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a system of medical treatment which studies the way energy moves in the body through a series
of channels called meridians. This energy can be accessed at different points on the body called
Acupoints. Treatment is accomplished by manipulating the energy by inserting fine needles at the acupoints.
Each meridian is connected to different internal organs, and each point can produce different physiological
effects in the body.
Acupuncture knowledge has existed at least 5,000 years, the approximate age of the oldest know written records
that refer to it. Given the highly developed state of acupuncture knowledge in those documents, it is believed
that knowledge of the meridians and acupoints has existed far longer. Acupuncture began to be formally
introduced to the United States in the 1970s, and has quickly grown to become one of the most popular
alternative medical treatments, due to being highly effective at treating a wide variety
of conditions, its non-invasive nature with few side effects, and its relatively low cost.
The basic philosophy of an acupuncture treatment is to rebalance the flow of Qi, or energy, in the body and to
rebalance qi in the organs. A typical treatment lasts about an hour. Acupuncture can be used alone or
as part of your overall treatment plan in conjunction with other treatment modalities.
